Liberty, London
Liberty London, established in 1875, is a renowned department store nestled in the heart of London’s West End. Founded by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, the store began as a small shop selling ornaments, fabrics, and objets d’art inspired by the Aesthetic Movement. Liberty quickly gained popularity for its distinctive Tudor-style building and eclectic merchandise.
In the early 20th century, Liberty became synonymous with the Arts and Crafts movement, fostering collaborations with artists such as William Morris. The store’s fabric department, particularly the iconic Liberty prints, gained international acclaim. Throughout the decades, Liberty maintained its commitment to unique, high-quality goods, attracting a diverse clientele.
During World War II, the store survived the Blitz, and its timber façade served as a symbol of resilience. In the post-war era, Liberty continued to evolve, embracing modern design while preserving its historic charm. The Swinging Sixties saw Liberty at the forefront of fashion and design, hosting events that connected the store with the cultural zeitgeist.
Today, Liberty London stands as a cultural institution, housing luxury fashion, beauty, and home goods. Its mock-Tudor exterior and iconic floral prints remain distinctive, embodying a timeless blend of tradition and innovation in the dynamic landscape of retail.
Pica Bar, Perth Cultural Centre
Pica Bar, nestled in Perth’s Cultural Centre, thrives as a dynamic cultural hub with a rich history. The venue resides in a heritage building, once part of the Perth Boys School established in the late 1800s. Transformed into a contemporary space, Pica Bar seamlessly merges its historical roots with a modern ambiance, hosting art exhibitions, live performances, and lively social events within this storied architectural gem.
Maxi Coffee Bar, Singapore
Nestled in the heart of Singapore’s Chinatown, Maxi Coffee Bar holds a piece of architectural history. Housed in a restored heritage building, this coffee haven seamlessly blends the old with the new. Originally an early 20th-century structure, the building’s revitalization has transformed it into a chic space, preserving its historical charm while offering patrons a modern environment to relish specialty brews and toasted sandwiches. Maxi Coffee Bar stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of tradition and contemporary coffee culture in Singapore.
Witches Cauldron, Subiaco
The Witches Cauldron in Subiaco, a culinary enchantment since the 1960s, cast a spell with its diverse menu, mystical ambiance, and enduring charm. Sadly, this iconic restaurant closed its doors, leaving behind a legacy of magical dining experiences that enriched Subiaco’s culinary landscape for decades.
King Somm Bar, Bayswater
King Somm is a bar located in Perth, known for its unique history. Situated on a site that once housed a billiard saloon from 1919, it underwent various transformations, including a hairdressing business and a dry-cleaning establishment. The bar has a rich past, with connections to different businesses, including a second hand bookstore and even a rumoured black market for potatoes.
Daunt Books, London
Daunt Books occupies a historic Edwardian building on Marylebone High Street, designed by Charles Voysey in 1910. The architectural gem features oak galleries and large skylights, creating a welcoming space for readers. Originally a bookshop catering to travellers, its timeless design and literary tradition make it a cultural landmark in London.
